OPPORTUNITY: Maestra x Ferguson New Musicals Lab ~ Summer Writing Residency

The inaugural New Musicals Lab (NML) at CNU/the Ferguson Center, in collaboration with Maestra, is offering an exclusive, sponsored development opportunity for 1-2 new musical theatre composers within the Maestra Community.

The Residency is scheduled to take place from July 12- 21, 2021 at the Ferguson Center for the Arts in the beach town of Newport News, VA. The selected writers will join the Inaugural Cohort of the Writing Residency at the CNU/Ferguson New Musicals Lab.

This opportunity is intended for writers with a minimum of 3+ years hands-on experience in the musical theatre industry. Writers are offering an opportunity to develop their new musical in the beach town for 12 days with the underwritten support of Christopher Newport University and the Ferguson Center.

Artists-in-Residence will receive housing, travel stipend, and an $800 honorarium. The selected writers will receive a sponsored writing retreat so they can exclusively focus on developing their musical, with an emphasis on work/life balance and our “weekends” will consist of 2 days off.

The NML is providing rehearsal and performance space, access to 18 actors from the 2021 NML Company for your development purposes, access to private work space and notation software, as well as the opportunity share your work with other writers, perform your work, record demos, time to walk in the woods and ponder the meaning of life, and maybe a trip to Busch Gardens.

Applications must be submitted via Google Form by Thursday June 17th at 12:00p EDT. Applicants will be notified by June 20th of their status.
