First Takes

First Takes is a curated reading session and master class that gives opportunities to composers, lyricists, conductors, orchestrators, copyists, and instrumentalists to generate and rehearse new music in a supportive and unpressured environment. Offered three times a year (April, August, and December), First Takes creates a pipeline for emerging Maestras and Broadway veterans to be in dialogue with each other through music and community. All participants must be members of the Maestra and/or RISE Directories.

Interested in participating? Are you…

…an early or mid-career composer, orchestrator, and/or copyist eager to collaborate on new work?
…an early or mid-career music director or instrumentalist based in the NYC/Tri-State area, or someone who wants to cover their travel here to participate?
…a more established musician who wants to connect with emerging artists through communal music-making?
…someone interested in working in the musical theater industry?

Then consider applying for FIRST TAKES!

Submissions for our next session on August 17, 2026 are now open. Learn more and Apply here.

Each session is three hours and includes four new pieces, interspersed with a social gathering. During each piece’s rehearsal time, the Music Director leads the reading session in collaboration with the creative team, and feedback is provided from a Music Supervisor and Vocal Coach in the room. Pieces and participants are selected based on that session’s theme and a balance of experience, and applications are released online approximately two months before the next session.

Maestra is committed to ensuring a fair and equitable application process for all applicants. Each submission is carefully reviewed by a selection committee composed of Maestra industry professionals from a range of fields and backgrounds. Our team strives to uphold transparency and inclusivity, with every decision guided by our mission to empower women and gender-expansive music-makers in musical theater.

Those selected will participate on a voluntary basis. Selected participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodations. All participants must be members of the Maestra or RISE Directories.
