First Takes creates a pipeline for women, nonbinary people, and people of color to make music alongside working professionals. The program, which is offered three times a year, provides a platform for Maestra musicians to perform and be heard in a supportive and unpressured environment.
In an industry whose make up, as recently as 2021, has been 67% male and 86% white, First Takes aims to simulate a professional reading session, better preparing early-career professionals for the workplace. The program also offers a crucial opportunity for developing new music projects and meeting future collaborators.
