Job Description

Under the direction of composer and saxophonist Michael Thomas, the New York Youth Symphony Jazz
Band is a 17-member swing ensemble dedicated to studying, rehearsing, and performing classic big band
jazz music. Modeled on the bands of the 1930's and 1940's, the Jazz program preserves this heritage and,
keeping with jazz traditions, incorporates it into the current and emerging styles that define the genre for
the present generation.

Position Duration
September 2023 — May 2024
Attendance at rehearsals and concerts is crucial. Rehearsals are Sundays from 5:00-7:30pm at the NYYS
Studio Space located in the office at 110 West 40th Street, Suite 505, New York, NY 10018. There are
typically 4 concerts per season, plus 1-3 outreach concerts/events.

Requirements
The successful candidate will have a background in jazz, production experience, excellent verbal and
written communication skills, strong organizational skills, professionalism, and computer literacy. An
enthusiastic and positive attitude is essential. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to work from
a personal laptop and smartphone are needed. An enthusiastic and problem-solving attitude as well as
some performance experience is highly encouraged.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Jazz Band Manager reports directly to the Director of Artistic Planning and will assist the Jazz Band
Director and senior staff with the following duties:
• Manage auditions held at the NYYS Office.
• Attend the Intensive on _____ and each Sunday evening rehearsal, dress rehearsal, and concert.
• Rehearsal set up and tear down of chairs, stands, amps, and drum kit.
• Track attendance of students and notify administrative staff of regular absences and lateness.
• Communicate with students and parents regarding rehearsal schedules, policies, and
announcements.
• Transport equipment to all concerts, i.e. band stands, extension cords, amps, drum kit, and music
folder suitcase
• Prepare stage plots and roster for each concert.
• Assist senior office staff with pre- and post-performance coordination.
• Coordinate community outreach events with band members and staff.
• Manage music library and switch out charts before/after each concert cycle.
• Some chart preparation may be involved.

Candidate Profile:
NYYS seeks a highly pro-active, organized, and responsible individual with an interest in arts
administration, music education, and/or event production for the 2023/24 season. Knowledge of and
previous experience with jazz music is required (playing or managing). Outstanding interpersonal and
critical thinking skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office, and the ability to work from a personal laptop and
smartphone are needed. An enthusiastic and problem-solving attitude as well as some performance
experience is highly encouraged.
