DEIA

Maestra’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access committee was initially convened as a small group in January 2020 but has now grown to 30 members who meet monthly. Since its inception, the DEIA committee has focused on three areas: training and education, network building, and providing resources.

In August of 2020, the committee partnered with Women of 802 (the musicians union in NYC) to offer a three part series called “Pass The Mic: Black Women in Conversation.” Since then, the committee has supported Maestra by offering several workshops including DEIA training for our Board and committee members led by Diversity Consultant Lindsay Roberts, an anti-racism workshop called “Embodying Change” led by Tanya Birl-Torres, and an ongoing series of workshops for the entire Maestra community led by gender consultant Josie Kearns. Along with Josie Kearns, the DEIA committee has guided a re-thinking of Maestra’s mission and messaging to better reflect the organization’s desire to be inclusive of its nonbinary members, and they are at work now to provide captioning and sign-language interpretation options for many of Maestra’s technical workshops and events.

To get involved, please send an email to Faye Chiao or Anna Ebbesen, DEIA Committee Co-Chairs, or to Judy Yin-Chi Lee, Maestra Chief Program Officer.
