Job Description

The School of Theatre invites applications for a full-time Accompanist/Music Director faculty member in the BFA Musical Theatre program. The position will work with the head of Musical Theatre and other faculty to build on the program's many strengths. This is a limited term multi-year position, funded for 2 years with excellent chances of renewal, with a start date in August 2023.

The College of Arts and Architecture is working to establish a culture of anti-racism and anti-oppression that embraces individual identities, fosters a culture of inclusion, and promotes equity through curricula, values, standards, ideals, policies and practices. The ideal candidate will provide evidence of their experience with, and interest in, contributing to these goals.

Duties include accompanying voice lessons for BFA musical theatre majors, accompanying/music directing studio classes (example classes include Song Analysis, Scene Study, New Works, Showcase), and teaching music theory classes. Other responsibilities include music direction of select studio and mainstage productions, participation in student recruitment, faculty committees and governance. The ideal candidate will have a passion for developing new musicals as well as remaining current in the field regarding evolving styles, techniques, and repertoire. Qualifications include significant professional experience in accompanying/teaching/coaching. The successful candidate must have comprehensive knowledge of repertoire and styles of musical theatre (including pop, rock, country, and rap/spoken word), knowledge of classical vocal repertoire, and strong sight-reading skills. Proficiency with Finale and MainStage software programs, and experience in arranging is desired.

Minimum qualifications are a Master’s degree or its equivalent in professional experience as an accompanist/music director. Candidate should demonstrate evidence of equitable considerations, awareness, and practice regarding curricula development, inclusive practices in educating diverse student bodies or working with a diverse faculty and staff, along with evidence of working collectively to cultivate a culture that supports success and enables all members of a college community to thrive.
