Biography

Composer | singer MARISA MICHELSON, founder of Constellation Chor, an immersion in voice, movement and spirit, is an award winning creator of music-theatre, oratorio, and musicals. Marisa is also a sought-after voice teacher. She recently won an inaugural Eric Salzman Award for New Music Theatre Composition. In September, Constellation Chor opened Jaap Van Zweden’s tenure with the New York Philharmonic, premiering as the “moving voices” in Filament by Ashley Fure. Constellation Chor will be performing with Clair Chase at The Kitchen in March. Michelson’s Desire|Divinity Project investigating the liminal space between earthly and divine love, and directed by Ethan Heard, has been developed by Heartbeat Opera and Judson Memorial Church. Naamah’s Ark, an oratorio written with Pulitzer Prize winer Royce Vavrek, starring Tony-Award winner Victoria Clark, and commissioned by MasterVoices for five choirs/200 singers, headlined NYC’s River to River Festival in Rockefeller Park last June and was subsequently presented by the National Opera Association in Salt Lake City in January 2019. Her highly-praised musical with Joshua H. Cohen, Tamar of the River, was produced by Prospect Theater and garnered two Drama Desk Nominations . In 2018 her musical with Jason Grote, One Thousand Nights and One Day was produced by Prospect Theater Company at the Art/NY Theater and was a Time Out Critics Pick; Awards: Eric Salzman Award for New Music Theatre Composition; 2018 National Endowment for the Arts; 2017 Lower Manhattan Cultural Council; Jonathan Larson.
