Laura Brenneman

Biography

Laura Brenneman is a composer and music educator based in Brooklyn, NY. As composer-lyricist and co-creator of the puppet theatre piece Fox vs the Kingdom, she is the recipient of two Jim Henson Foundation production grants. With collaborator Jenny Mercein, she is the recipient of a 2023 Dorothy Beckemeyer Skau Art and Music Fund grant (Newcomb Institute) to support the development of a new musical based on the lives of female modern artists. Other projects include music for Antipodes (Danspace, NYC) a commission from The Women’s Project (NYC) for Gurley, a musical based on the life of Helen Gurley Brown, arrangements and accompaniment for Martha Clarke’s The Threepenny Opera (Atlantic Theatre Company, NYC), and original songs for the TV series Heirloom.

As a teaching artist, Laura holds certification in Dalcroze Pedagogy from the Lucy Moses School (NYC). She has taught students in both public and private schools in NYC, including Berkeley Carroll, Talent Unlimited High School, and Packer Collegiate Institute. Laura is the recipient of a 2021 Knutson Grant for professional development in music education from the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. She is also a 2021 recipient of the NYC Arts in Education Roundtable’s ‘Empire State Creates’ grant for her curriculum project, "The Classroom Album: Fostering Collaborative Behavior through Group Composition". Laura is the owner of Stratford Music, a performance and studio space in Park Slope, Brooklyn. She garnered her undergraduate education in composition and piano at UCLA, and holds a Master of Arts in Music Education from Hunter College.
