Joanna Birchfield

Biography

Joanna Birchfield was raised in Houston, Texas, and now resides in New York City, New York. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Clarinet Performance from The University of Texas at Arlington, and a Master’s degree in Woodwind Studies from New York University. While at NYU she studied with John Miller, Ted Sperling, and Joshua Rosenblum in the NYU Broadway Orchestra. She performed "Songs for a New World" and "Applause", and was a rotating section woodwind doubler for other production projects. Joanna also was a part of the NYU Orchestra and NYU Wind Symphony. Professionally, Joanna has performed in "Company" and in local ensembles for holiday events.

She has commissioned and performed world premiere chamber music at the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest in 2018, 2019 and 2021. In 2018 and 2019 she performed at the Henri-Selmer Summer Academy held at Michigan State University, and in 2016 she performed in the Saarburg Chamber Music Festival in Saarburg, Germany.
While in Texas, she maintained a small private clarinet studio. Since moving to New York, she has also added saxophone students.

Additionally, she holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Social Work, and spent a fulfilling 15+ year career in Texas, Arkansas, and Iowa as an LMSW in the medical field. For fun, she is also a Certified Pasty Chef, and owned a bakery in Texas.

Joanna is a member of the International Clarinet Association and Chamber Music America.
