Jae M Author
They/Them
Biography
Jae M Author is a composer & performer dedicated to stretching the bounds of creative process and outcome. As a woodwind doubler, Jae performs on bassoon, saxophones, and clarinets. They have most recently worked as a bassoonist for “Into the Woods” & “The Music Man” (Reed 5 book: baritone saxophone, clarinet, bassoon). Jae also worked as a substitute musician for “Peter Pan” performing the Reed 6 book (bass clarinet, bassoon) and the Rhode Island College Orchestra as principal bassoonist.
Their work as a creative focuses on transgender and disabled experiences, as well as the intersectionality that affects both of these groups. Their composition performed at the Swiss Institute / Contemporary Art New York, “inaccessibility/possibility”, is a graphic score that proves the potential of access in our society through layers of translucent paper and limited notion on the forefront. Jae is passionate about the power of improvisation and is excited to further discover and collaborate how it can be used as a tool of acceptance.
Jae is currently enrolled at Manhattan School of Music and previously studied at Boston Conservatory. In academic orchestral opportunities, they have performed as principal bassoonist in Gershwin's “American in Paris”, Sibelius' “Violin Concerto in D Minor”, and Bernstein's “West Side Story Symphonic Dances”.
In all areas of creativity, they are invested in collaborating and creating contemporary repertoire involving multiphonics using methods accessible for all musicians and audiences. They had the opportunity to successfully workshop and premiere a piece with Mosaic Composers Collective in November 2023.
