Biography

Gianna Ciaburri is a lead trumpeter based in Staten Island, New York. Originally a French hornist, Gianna began playing trumpet during her sophomore year of high school (whilst attending Susan E. Wagner High School). It was during this time that she began specializing in and developing her lead trumpet playing, specifically in the big band/jazz genres.

During her senior year of high school, Gianna was appointed to the coveted lead trumpet role on full scholarship for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra. Directed by trumpeter Tatum Greenblatt, the pre-professional ensemble had numerous performances in Jazz at Lincoln Center's Ertegun Atrium, Dizzy's Club, Appel Room and Rose Hall. The ensemble also competed in the Charles Mingus Competition in 2023.

In addition to this, Gianna has also had numerous performances with her high school at Carnegie Hall, Birdland Jazz Club, Dizzy's Club, Woodlawn Cemetery, Shapeshifter Lab and at Rose Hall during Jazz at Lincoln Center's 28th Annual Essentially Ellington Competition. Her high school placed second overall, and she was awarded an "Outstanding Trumpet" recognition. Gianna had the honor of performing Duke Ellington's trumpet feature, "Eighth Veil" alongside trumpeter Marcus Printup, who she is most inspired by.

Aside from performing, Gianna is extremely passionate about teaching and music education. During the summer of 2023, she worked as a trumpet counselor at French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts, where she gave lessons and advised younger trumpet players in their studies. She currently volunteers at her former high school where she gives private lessons, holds trumpet sectionals, and works with their jazz band.
Gianna immerses herself in classical trumpet, in addition to jazz lead trumpet and pit orchestra playing. She has played in her high school's productions of Broadway's "Beauty and the Beast" and "Legally Blonde". While working at French Woods, she played trumpet in the pits of "Curtains", "Disaster", "Barnum", "Assassins" and "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying".

Gianna is currently pursuing a degree in Trumpet Performance at Montclair State University. Her current/previous mentors and teachers include Donald Batchelder, Marcus Printup, Nathan Eklund, Jon Faddis, Tatum Greenblatt, Todd Stoll, Willy Hakim, Summer Camargo and Seneca Black, along with others.
