Biography
I just released my 26th solo album, and have produced 10 compilations showcasing the work of songwriters whose work I love. I can't read music, learned by watching lessons on PBS when I was 12 years old. In September 2019 I spent a month at Yaddo, working on a theatrical project. I love songwriters - I tell singers, "Please call me if you are looking for special material. If I haven't written what you're looking for, chances are good I will know the songwriter who has." In April 2019 I was inducted into the Rochester NY Music Hall Of Fame. Songs of mine have been sung and recorded by Sutton Foster, Betty Buckley, Karen Ziemba, Susan Egan, Andrea Marcovicci, Sierra Boggess, Kate Rockwell, and others.
In 2024 the York Theatre hosted two readings of "InunDATEd" written by Alice Scovell that showcased 10 songs of mine. I am slowly phasing out my performing career -- let the young kids do the heavy lifting! I'm still in the game, as a songwriter.
I now make videos and on occasion sing live to videos in concert. I also twirl batons (that's the "other" marked below).
I am "old school" when it comes to songwriting. Johnny Mercer said to Ervin Drake, Ervin Drake said to me, and I say to you: "If your song doesn't rhyme exactly, it's because you haven't finished working on it."
