Anessa Marie

Biography

ANESSA MARIE is a composer/lyricist, music director, pianist, and orchestrator based in NYC. Her song cycle, Finding Beautiful (written with Danny Bristoll), debuted at NYMF in 2019. She is currently writing Reign, a rock musical based on Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II, with Will Shishmanian. Other musicals currently in development include A First Glimpse of Light and [email protected]$%able, both of which she is also writing the book. She is currently serving as music assistant for the world premiere of A Beautiful Noise to premiere in Boston in June. Upcoming: The Griswold’s Broadway Vacation (AMD, Rehearsal Pianist), Joy (AMD, Rehearsal Pianist), Wonderboy (5th Ave, Orchestrator), and The Golden Record (Orchestrator).

During the 2020 shutdown of the theatre industry, Anessa composed A New York Renaissance for solo piano and symphony orchestra. Written in six movements, the piece tells the story of Anessa’s experience living through COVID in New York City, from March 2020 to Inauguration Day, 2021. The piece will premiere in 2023.

As a trans woman, Anessa firmly believes in the power of music as a tool for unity and community. In 2020, Anessa founded the Phoenix Trans Chorus of NYC, and in December 2020 the chorus released a holiday video of The Ones We Choose (written with Danny Bristoll). The chorus will finally be able to come together in person in Fall 2022 for its inaugural concert featuring commissioned work from trans and non-binary composers. Anessa also serves as the resident music director for Trans Voices Trans Cabaret, founded by Donnie Cianciotto. With a passion for working to improve the overall experiences of TGNC performers in musical theatre, Anessa also regularly serves as a panelist and educator on ways we can modify the language we use when talking about music to be more inclusive of all identities, specifically the TGNC community.

Anessa also has a passion for education and ensuring the arts live on, and has served as a guest artist with NYU, Pace University, Fordham University, CAP21, LIU-Post, Broadway for Arts Education, The International College of Musical Theatre, The Growing Studio, Musical Theatre Factory, etc. She has served as a mentor/music director for The American Theatre Wing’s Musical Theatre Songwriting Challenge, and her arrangements and orchestrations can be heard on the 2021 and 2022 albums.
