Biography

Amanda Freedman is a Canadian-American Jewish artist and educator who is passionate about using humor to tell stories with heart. Her award-winning musical THE ANGEL MAKERS with Lorenzo Pipino has been developed through NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, the @Abrons Series at Abrons Arts Center, NYU Graduate Acting’s The 29 Project, and Western Connecticut State University’s New Works Class. The show had its premiere production as a part of the 2024 SheNYC Arts Festival at the Off-Broadway Connelly Theatre, where it was selected as one of eight new works out of 450 submissions. The show had a fully sold out run, and was awarded Best Production of a Musical, Best Score, and Best Leading Actor. Amanda also collaborated with JUNO-award winning children's musician Jack Grunsky to turn his songbook into a new family musical called PLAYGROUND, with director Olivia Daniels and producer Elly Barlin-Daniels. PLAYGROUND premiered at the 2025 Toronto Fringe Festival to stellar reviews and was awarded Best of Fringe. As a lyricist-librettist, Amanda’s other shows in development include ONLY YESTERDAY with Stephanie Leah Evans and Jonah Greene (KU Jayhawk Performance Lab); and WAITING ON NEW YORK with Natasha Ashworth, Pat Via, and Lisa Weiner Jerden.

Amanda taught 8th Grade English for two years as a Teach For America Corps Member, where she incorporated art forms such as poetry, playwriting, and movement into her classroom instruction. She currently works as the Program Assistant for the National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT), helping oversee the Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge for High School Students. She holds a BA in English from Tufts University and an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU Tisch.
