Music Director – Job Description for Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre
Supervisor: Artistic Producer
Department: Music and Production
Primary Job Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Musical responsibilities:
o Responsible for accompanying all rehearsals and conducting/playing all performances.
An Associate Conductor may be hired to assist with some performances (1-2 per week)
o Responsible for all score preparation including any cuts, orchestrations, or alterations as required.
o Responsible for teaching and instructing the music to all cast members and orchestra musicians.
o Responsible for assisting the Director, Choreographer, and Production Staff in the appropriate interpretation of the score.
o Lead recording sessions when required.
• Supervisory responsibilities:
o In conjunction with the Director, Choreographer, and Stage Manager, create an appropriate rehearsal schedule.
o Instruct and give notes to the cast and orchestra during rehearsals and as requested throughout the contracted performance schedule.
o In conjunction with the Sound Designer, Stage Manager, and Artistic Producer, ensure and maintain the musical integrity of a production.
o Prepare and execute rehearsal and performance schedule for musicians, and disseminate all necessary materials and paperwork to the musicians.
o Budget, audition, and hire pit musicians, including any substitutes and/or Associate Conductors or interns. Provide payroll on a bi-weekly basis for services provided by the musicians.
Secondary Job Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Maintain and program and/or edit tracking programing.
o The ability to create tracks is not required but would be beneficial.
• Attend all production staff and other required meetings.
• Assist in the musical direction of children’s shows and other musical offerings.
• Provide input into the musical challenges and possibilities of upcoming productions, including, but not limited to:
o Providing suggestions regarding casting and vocal ability of cast members
o Providing audition materials as requested by the Artistic Producer
o Rehearsing understudies for lead roles
o Providing musical insight into planned productions or productions selected for future seasons.
• Remain current in understanding of professional theatrical practices, technology, and personnel management.
Technical Skills:
• Professional knowledge of musical theatre genres, instrumentation, and orchestration
• Professional knowledge of performance standards in musical theatre, including vocal and instrumental production.
• Proficient in the use of Word, Excel, PDF viewers, and/or similar office and communication technology, including web and email.
• Proficient in the use of Dropbox and other group-sharing and social-media sites and programs.
• Knowledge in the use of Logic Pro X (or other music production software) and QLab (or other live performance software).
• Knowledge of keyboard programming (console and software programming - Mainstage)
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
• Ability to positively communicate and teach musical ideas and concepts to a wide range of staff, personalities, and knowledge levels.
• Ability to give notes in a positive and appropriate way.
• Use of a calm and professional demeanor.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to execute projects and rehearsals in a timely manner and to completion.
• Ability to work independently and with a flexible schedule that includes normal business hours, nights, and weekends.
• Ability to communicate with all members of the staff, cast, and production team in a timely and appropriate manner.
• Previous experience in working with children or a background in music education strongly encouraged.
Pay-scale and Benefits:
• This is a full-time, salaried position – $45-50K per year, to be negotiated based on previous experience and ability. Paid bi-weekly.
o Extra stipends available for Children’s shows and extra duties (guaranteed first right of refusal)
