Biography

Wai-Yi Wong is a London-based composer for film, orchestrator and arranger from Hong Kong. Her unique versatility and sensibilities have been exhibited in over 40 film, television and animation projects.

Wai-Yi's recent works include scoring for "Un Soroll Llunyà" ("A Distant Noise") directed by Adrià Guxens. It has been selected to be premiered in D'A Barcelona Film Festival in March 2023. She has also recently composed for "Light Vessel", a physical performance by Hazel Lam commissioned by Kakilang Festival 2023, and has been premiered in London in late-March 2023. Her score for “Landing Point" (《度日》), a short film directed by Hong Cheng, has been selected to be premiered in Palm Springs Film Festival 2021 and to be in competition of IndieX Film Festival 2021. She has also scored for Hong Kong TV series "Limited Education" (《教束》) and has been voted the "Best TV Series" of ViuTV in 2019.

After graduating with a master degree of Scoring for Film, Television and Video Games from Berklee College of Music (2017) and a bachelor degree in Music from Hong Kong Baptist University (2013), Wai-Yi found her passion in exploring the possibility of making music as a unity with images.

With her academic training and working experience in pop-music industry, her music demonstrates diversity in genres, ranging from classical to rock to hybrid, and has been performed and recorded in Europe and Hong Kong. Her orchestral piece "Unchained" was recorded in AIR Studios in London; "El Beso" recorded by Budapest Art Orchestra, and "Conation" performed by Chinese Music Virtuosi in Hong Kong. The piece has brought her the third prize of New Generation 2015, a composition contest organised by Hong Kong Composers' Guild and RTHK Radio 4.

Wai-Yi aims to make her music accessible to the general public through films and theatres. Her compositions and stories have been featured on media outlets such as Billboard Radio China, CRHK, RTHK Radio 4, and HK01.
