Rachel O'Brien

Hi there! I am a music director, pianist, and educator based in Toronto (Canada). Most recently I was assistant to the music director and alternate conductor on the extremely lauded Canadian premiere of Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 (Crow's Theatre/Musical Stage Co). The musical ran for 16 weeks and I conducted & played over 50 performances.

Selected Music Direction credits include: Alice in Wonderland (Bad Hats Theatre/Soulpepper - Dora Mavor Moore Nomination, Outstanding Musical Direction); A Christmas Carol (Shaw Festival); Alice in Wonderland, Twelfth Night (Theatre Sheridan), and over 100 performance of Anne & Gilbert (Charlottetown PEI). I've spent 3 seasons as the Associate Music Director at the Charlottetown Festival, playing and and conducting selected performances of Maggie (also performed at Theatre Aquarius and the Savoy Theatre), I'm Every Woman, Tell Tale Harbour, and Anne of Green Gables - The Musical.

I am a former Shaw Festival Music Intern, where I assisted on (including playing and conducting performances) Iriving Berlin's Holiday Inn, Assassins, Gatsby's Jazz/Sonny's Blues, The Duke and Two Irenes, and Shawground/Fairground.

I have a Bachelor of Music (Piano, minor Women's and Gender Studies) from Mount Allison University, and I'm a Part-Time Faculty member for Sheridan College's Musical Theatre degree program.

Currently I am the music director at the Charlottetown Festival (under the music supervision of Festival MD Bob Foster), conducting all weekly performances of Anne of Green Gables - The Musical and Jersey Boys. I am the first woman to ever MD Anne at the Festival (wild).

Next, happily & excitedly, I will be music directing & supervising the Canadian Premiere of Suzy Wilde & Rose Napoli's new musical, After the Rain, co-produced by Musical Stage Co & Tarragon, and directed by Marie Farsi. Performances begin May 27 2025.
