Norah De Chant

Norah De Chant

Norah De Chant is one of the brightest up-and-comers on the trombone on the NYC scene today. Whether as an improviser, section musician, composer, arranger, or educator, Norah’s unique voice shines through in every musical endeavor she takes on.

Norah has performed with The DIVA Jazz Orchestra, The Rob Edwards Big Band, The Stan Rubin Orchestra, Triad Brass, The Joseph Herbst Big Band, Flora’s Fanfare, The Villagers Brass Band, The Small Dog Jazz Society, and the J.C. Hopkins Biggish Band, the latter for which she also works as the group’s primary for-hire arranger. She has performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Birdland, The Django, Zinc Bar, Minton’s Playhouse, and Aaron Davis Hall as well as countless smaller venues in and around NYC. Norah completed a master’s in jazz arts at Manhattan School of Music in 2018, where she studied with Steve Turre, Luis Bonilla, and Marshall Gilkes. She has performed alongside such artists as Joe Lovano, Stefon Harris, Jim McNeely, Sherrie Maricle, Phil Woods, Linda Purl, and Jeff Coffin. In 2016, Norah was the first-place winner of the Texas State Trombone Symposium Jazz Solo Competition, winning a Rath R100 trombone as a prize which she plays to this day. Norah also leads her own jazz trio, and makes up one half of electronic jazz fusion duo Two Non-Androids alongside Atlanta-based drummer Matt Hendler in which she also plays keyboards and contributes programming and production in Ableton.

In addition to performing and composing, Norah has taught trombone lessons at Fordham University, has served as an assistant ensemble leader at New York Jazz Academy, has worked with Manhattan School of Music’s Outreach Program, and has maintained private trombone studios in NYC and Paris. In December of 2017, Norah gave a masterclass at Appalachian State University on working as a freelance musician in NYC and on jazz improvisation.
