Laura Jobin-Acosta

Biography

Laura Jobin-Acosta, composer/soprano, is a multi-disciplinary musical artist. As a composer, her music has been said to bestow "ease" and "vivacity" making the characters in her opera, A Way Forward, "easily accessible" (The Washington Post), as well as being able to write "dulcet bass vocal lines" that are "notably melodious" (Twin Cities Arts Reader).

Laura was recently commissioned by Washington National Opera, for the American Opera Initiative 2023-2024, where her work premiered at the Kennedy Center in January, 2024. She was an inaugural recipient of the OPERA America IDEA Residency at the National Opera Center, 2021-2022 and she was a finalist in BMP: "Next Gen" as part of Beth Morrison Projects, 2021 where her piece was premiered and recorded at National Sawdust in Brooklyn.

In addition to her opera, A Way Forward, with Washington National Opera, other large work include Breaking the Barrier: a setting of poems by Harlem Renaissance poet Claude McKay for choir, soloists, organ & jazz ensemble, which was commissioned by Canterbury Choral Society and The Seven Last Words of Christ, a contemporary baroque-style chamber oratorio for soloists and choir. Additional recent commissioners include Brick Church and Ensemble Pi.

As a regular performer of new and classic work, Jobin-Acosta's professional singing experience expands internationally. As a soloist, she has performed in Germany, Austria, Israel, and often in New York City, where Laura is also a professional singer in multiple choruses including the New York Philharmonic Chorus, which recently recorded with the classical music label Deutsche Grammophon in Shanghai, China. She is also a singer in Canterbury Choral Society, who regularly perform sacred choral masterpieces with full original orchestration.

Her education includes a BM in Classical Voice from Denver University and MM in Classical Composition from SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music where she studied with Laura Kaminsky and Kamala Sankaram. She is based in New York City.
