Hilarie Spangler
Biography
The power that is wielded when people come together to engage in discussion, application, and exploration of the state of their community is unlike any other power.
As an Appalachian artist, storytelling and uncovering truth are at the forefront of what what I’m interested in. As a theatre artist, they way I approach work comes from a pursuit of truth, community and a deep commitment to storytelling. I’m a storyteller- and the way I engage with theatre is a practice of authentic and collaborative community-building, movement, and artistic media. As a visual artist and composer, I look at the way that things converge, whether it be different motifs in a music movement or an oil painting with a photograph, I find myself curious about the “space in between.”
Always a lover of the interdisciplinary, I practice as a musician, theatre artist, arts producer, storyteller and activist deeply interested in the connection between rural, urban and international art practice. As a scholar, my research is in both the arts and in community development.
