Biography

BRITTON MATTHEWS is a freelance percussionist active in musical theater and contemporary chamber music in the New York tri-state area. Equally comfortable in orchestral and pop/rock settings, Britton is proficient in symphonic percussion, drum set, mallet percussion (2- and 4-mallet), and piano.

Britton recently originated the drum book for the off-Broadway musical Millennials are Killing Musicals (book and music by Nico Juber) presented by Out of the Box Theatrics. She has also worked as a sub musician at SIX, the Yiddish revival of Fiddler on the Roof, The Nutty Professor, Group! The Musical, and The Hello Girls. She held the chair for the US premiere production of Phillip Pulman's The Firework Maker’s Daughter (New Victory Theater, NY). Additionally, Britton has premiered more than ten original musicals with Sgouros & Bell at the historic Players Theatre in Greenwich Village, NYC.

Britton has premiered new chamber works with Parsons Dance, Wordless Music Orchestra, Metropolis Ensemble, Ensemble LPR, and Sigur Rós (featuring Jónsi and Alex Somers). As a member of Exit 9 Percussion Group, Britton has performed extensively across the country, presenting hundreds of clinics in schools and community centers. Britton served as percussion faculty at Molloy University for more than 12 years.

Britton received her Master of Music degree from Rutgers University, and her Bachelor of Music Education from Baylor University. She has studied with many notable percussionists, including Bob Becker, She-e Wu, Chris Deviney, Todd Meehan, and Larry Vanlandingham.

Britton lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband, two kids, and rescue mutt. In her spare time, she studies Spanish and loves to bake all things sweet.
