Betty Kean
Biography
I play tenor and alto saxophone, flute, and clarinet. I earned my B.M. in Jazz Saxophone Performance from the University of North Texas, and my M.M. in Jazz Arranging from William Paterson. I was part of the 2023 Maestra Mentorship cohort, under the mentorship of Kristy Norter. I've played on Cunard's Queen Elizabeth cruise ship as a theatre musician and ballroom musician for 2 years. I’m the woodwind player and co-writer for Brooklyn-based singer songwriter Leche Malo. I also play woodwinds and auxiliary percussion for Flying Leap's innovative Young Audiences programming throughout NYC, and I am a songwriting teaching artist with NYC Children’s Theatre. I’ve played as a guest saxophone soloist on CBS's Saturday Sessions with Grammy winner Brett McKenzie. I have an album of original compositions for a nine-piece band called Mx. Kean "Nonet" and more original music (and poetry set to music) on the way. I am an active force for gender equity in jazz and theatre and I am interested in all things teaching, writing, and performing (all genres welcome!).
