Biography

Award-winning playwright/composer/lyricist Andrea Markowitz became hooked on theatre at age seven, when she saw her first Broadway show. She earned degrees in English literature, musicology and psychology, and landed jobs in advertising, human resources, academia, and freelance writing and editing before authoring her first play. A New Jersey native and former self-avowed city girl, she became captivated by the serenity and scenery of a small town in Arizona's Sonoran Desert foothills, moved there, and reinvented herself once again. Now a full-time playwright/composer/lyricist, Andrea's writing career previously included roles as developmental editor, reviewer, and contributor on more than 50 organizational management trade and text books. She also edited memoirs and novels, and wrote more than 100 feature articles and advertorials for major newspapers, magazines and online publications. Andrea's plays have appeared in Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Washington, D.C. Awards include first prize in the Helen-Jean Play Contest, third place in the Baltimore Playwrights Festival, and second prize in the Playing With Art short play festival at Phoenix Art Museum. Andrea is Playwright in Residence at Desert Foothills Theater in Scottsdale, AZ. She is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America, ASCAP, The Playwrights' Center, and International Centre for Women Playwrights, and is an artistic member of Theatre Artists Studio in Phoenix, AZ.
