Biography

Aleksandra M. Weil is a composer, singer, songwriter and teaching artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Born and raised in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in the tumultuous aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, Aleksandra’s work often reflects on themes of cultural and political identity, gender inequality, state corruption and the resilience of the human spirit. Selected recent and upcoming theater works include Goodnight Bär (libretto by E. Govedare); NYMF/ASCAP Commission; Silueta (lyrics by E. Govedare, book by E. Ortiz); NJPAC Stage Exchange; Passage Theatre Company; Uprising, a one-act opera (libretto by L. Barati); The Tank; American Opera Projects/NYU; Henna Leaves, a one-act opera (libretto by L. Barati); The International House; AOP/NYU; A Rebel Prayer (book & lyrics by E. Govedare); Portsmouth College, Portsmouth, UK, The Tisch Center For New Musicals, Goodspeed Musicals; Love In The Dark (book by O. Israelsohn, lyrics by E. Roller); Dixon Place. Her work has been performed at Feinstein’s/54 Below, Joe’s Pub, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Dixon Place, The International House and on the West Coast at The Moore Theater, Triple Door and the 5th Avenue Theater New Works Program Writer’s Salon. Aleksandra is a co-founder of cabaret rock band Scarlet Room and the Govedare & Weil songwriting duo along with longtime collaborator Eloise Govedare. Hailed as the “new artist to watch” on Seattle Channel’s Art Zone with Nancy Guppy, Scarlet Room released three EP’s including Chapters A to Z, Scarlet Room, and From the Shadow and performed at esteemed festivals such as Bumbershoot and Seattle’s Pride. Aleksandra studied composition with world-renowned composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovski, Byron Au Yong, Mel Marvin and film scoring with Pat Irwin. Aleksandra holds an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and a BA in Women’s Studies from University of Washington.
