Adapting Musical Theatre for Kid Performers (w/ Myrna Conn)

May 12 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Free

These shows go by many names – JR, KIDS, Youth Edition, School Edition – but they are all musicals adapted for kid performers. This workshop will detail the considerations that go into creating youth-friendly theatrical properties. How does the age of the performers inform adaptation of everything from dialogue and character to vocal arrangement and composition? How can we optimize the flexibility of casting, designing, and staging these shows? How can the challenges of condensing and simplifying an existing musical become opportunities to give young performers an intuitive and fulfilling theatrical experience? We’ll explore the answers to these questions and more with examples and exercises that illuminate the unique joy of this genre.
